A Fun Hand from Saturday (And random tidbits)

Haven't posted in a while. Been busy with finals/holidays/etc. This isn't a "personal" blog so I'll leave it at that.

Here's a hand from Saturday's MP pairs duplicate game:

Board 26 - Red vs Red, you deal and pick up:

S: Jx
H: QTx
D: x
C: KQT98xx

I open 3c (doubt there
will be much disagremeent on this, but a few brave souls might venture 4c, or even 5c), and LHO overcalls 3d. Partner trots out 6c. All Pass.

Dummy comes down with:

S: AQTx
H: AJxx
D: Axx
C: Ax

Opening lead (doesn't matter to play): Club x

Play was quite straight forward. Both major suit finesses were on (as one would expect, on the auction.), making 7 when trumps go 2-2. Nothing can defeat 6c and 7NT is cold on the lay. In a field of 7 tables, we were the only one to bid a slam on the hand. Of the other 6 tables, 5 were in 3NT (3 made 7, 2 made 6), and one pair was in 4 of a Major, making 4.

Play throughout the rest of the session was solid, no major mishaps, and we managed to score a 56.25%, which was good enough to win the event and bring how 2.83 MPs, a nice early christmas present.

I'll be out of town (but still connected) Tuesday through Saturday -- I'm off to the Charleston Regional!

Bidding the slam looks very sensible, but isn't it a bit safer to check with RKCB that partner has the trump king? If you play Kickback (or simply 4d as RKCB over a 3c pre-empt)then there is also room to check on the trump queen without comitting to slam.
